Did you know that the construction industry was predominately male between 2003 and 2020. Despite the fact that the figures ranged from 9.1 million to 11.4 million, barely 10% of construction employees were women.

The demographics of the construction industry are significantly influenced by race as well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 60.9% of construction workers classified as non-Hispanic white in 2020. Hispanic folks make up another 30% of the construction workforce, almost double the 17.6% they make up of the general labor.

The prospects these companies provide can be made more alluring and inviting by removing gender-coded terminology from job descriptions. Experts define gender-coded language as words or phrases readers may associate with a particular gender, often based on stereotypes. Whereas phrases like sincerity, emotion, cooperation, and politeness are thought to have feminine codes, terms like confidence, ambition, determination, and fearlessness are said to have masculine codes. These phrases can be taken out of job descriptions to make them sound more neutral.
