Did you know that the uses of building information modeling (BIM) in the construction sector of the United States as of summer 2019; 49% percent of the surveyed builders stated that they use BIM in their companies for visualizations?
Builders can use this platform or central integrated design, modeling, planning, and collaboration. BIM provides all stakeholders with a digital representation of a building’s characteristics. The ongoing transformation of the industry will rely increasingly on BIM.
Benefits of BIM:
- Allows for continuous monitoring of projects by providing information on construction sequences over time and up-to-date information on costs.
- Facilitates collaboration among all stakeholders throughout a building’s life cycle, and thus promises large efficiency gains.
- A lifelong view of projects offers owners great benefits in the commissioning and operations phase and enables new business models in asset management.
- Offers closer contact with customers and improved efficiency of marketing and product support for manufacturers and service providers.
There are obstacles to implementation such as:
A. Project owners have a lack of understanding of BIM.
B. Interlinking of all participants in the value chain.
C. Issues of pricing and business model.
D. Develop new expertise (overcome the inertia of existing processes.)
For larger Companies who want to invest their time in BIM here are suggestions:
- Build up digital expertise and spread it across the company.
- Establish the technological foundation and complement digital capabilities through third parties where needed.
- Take on pioneering roles and share expertise to encourage the adoption of BIM among smaller companies.
