Building Memories (BM) uses personal experiences and relates them to topics of importance to building.
This BM explores my first visit to the island of Zakynthos, Greece in the summer of 1980.
After finishing my final year of architectural school in Versailles, France, I hitched to Brindisi, Italy, and took a boat to Zakynthos. I lived in the village of Skoulikadon, helping a friend, Tony, build a rather unoptimized, Chicago-style cottage. The house had no electricity, and water was only accessible via a well and a 20-foot rope with a bucket. The raised floor included a trap door, allowing Tony and the gang to hide if trouble came their way. It was an unforgettable experience—full of adventure and great memories—but one I don’t plan to repeat.
